Nifty Futures vs Nifty Options for Intraday: Which Suits Your Capital?
Margin vs premium, risk per 50-point move, time decay and a simple way to choose by capital, with worked numbers.

Key takeaways
- Nifty futures is a contract on the full Nifty value; a Nifty option buyer pays a premium for a right.
- One lot of Nifty is 65 units. In futures every Nifty point is ₹65 per lot, both ways.
- An option buyer can lose at most the premium, but time decay works against the buyer every day.
- Pick by capital and risk appetite, and size every trade from the stop-loss, not from margin.
01What you actually buy
When you buy Nifty futures, you take a contract on the full value of Nifty for one lot. If Nifty rises you gain, if it falls you lose, point for point, until you exit. There is no upper limit to either side.
When you buy a Nifty call (CE) or put (PE) option, you pay a premium for the right to gain from a move in one direction. If the move does not come, the premium can shrink or go to zero, but that premium is the most you can lose.

02Money needed: margin vs premium
One lot of Nifty is 65 units (as of 20 Sep 2026; check the current size on our F&O lot size page). With Nifty at a hypothetical 25,000:
| Nifty futures (1 lot) | ATM call option (buy 1 lot) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you put up | Margin ≈ ₹1,95,000 (assumed 12%) | Premium ₹150 × 65 = ₹9,750 |
| Position size | Full contract ₹16,25,000 | Option on the same lot |
| Extra funds needed? | Yes, if losses eat into margin (daily MTM) | No, the premium is paid upfront |

03Risk per move: what 50 Nifty points mean
In futures every Nifty point is worth ₹65 per lot. A 50-point move is ₹3,250 in your favour or against you.
An at-the-money option moves roughly half as much as Nifty to begin with (its delta is about 0.5), so the same 50 points change the premium by about ₹1,600 per lot. Read more on delta and other option Greeks in our option Greeks guide.

04Time decay and expiry day
An option has a fixed expiry. Every day that passes, part of the premium melts away, and the melting is fastest in the last few days. If Nifty stays flat, the futures position is roughly unchanged, but the option buyer loses money.
That is why our Nifty option calls come only on days when the index is moving, and none on flat days or expiry days. See the dates on our expiry days this month page.

05Which suits your capital?
A simple way to decide:
| Your situation | Usually suits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| About ₹1 lakh, starting out | Nifty option buying | Loss limited to premium; stop-loss on every trade |
| ₹3 lakh or more, high risk appetite | 1 lot of Nifty futures | Margin plus cushion for adverse moves |
| Not sure, or new to F&O | Learn first, trade small | Paper trade and size from the stop-loss |
Our Nifty option tips are option buying calls only (CE / PE), 1 to 3 on days with movement. Our Nifty future tips are 1 to 2 calls a day for traders with a high risk appetite, starting with 1 lot. Work out your quantity with the position size calculator.

06Common mistakes
?Nifty futures vs options: FAQs
Which is better for intraday, Nifty futures or Nifty options?
Neither is better for everyone. Futures move point for point with Nifty and need a large margin. Option buying needs less money and the loss is limited to the premium, but time decay works against you. Choose by capital and risk appetite.
How much money do I need for one lot of Nifty futures?
Margin is a percentage of contract value set by the exchange. With Nifty at a hypothetical 25,000 and lot size 65, the contract is ₹16,25,000, and a margin of about 12% would be roughly ₹1,95,000. Your broker shows the exact amount.
How much money do I need to buy one lot of a Nifty option?
Premium × lot size. A hypothetical premium of ₹150 × 65 = ₹9,750 for one lot. There is no margin for the buyer.
Can I trade Nifty options with ₹1 lakh?
Yes, option buying with a stop-loss can be started with about ₹1 lakh. Keep the loss on each trade small compared with your capital.
Why do option buyers lose money even when Nifty does not fall?
Because of time decay. An option loses value as expiry comes closer, faster in the last days, so a flat market hurts the buyer.
Can Nifty future or option tips guarantee profit?
No. Both futures and options carry risk and some calls will hit the stop-loss. No SEBI registered adviser can promise profit.
